Since people didn't get any of that they automatically claim that Disney ruined their childhood and that the movie sucks. I think the problem is that - as you are saying - the story didn't go into the direction many people liked or expected the ST to go - many expected even more interactions between Finn and Rey, Rey revealed to be a Skywalker/Solo/Kenobi, Kylo taking revenge on Rey instead of falling in love with her, Luke coming back with no hesitation and standing alone against the FO (which happened but not the way people thought) and Snoke as the Emperor 2.0 - the big baddie until the end of the ST. It doesn’t mean that TLJ is a good or bad film for it, but managing expectations is a key part in how fans, and to a lesser extent the general audience, react to a sequel. I think there’s still a strong majority of the audience that have enjoyed both movies so far, but I also think it’s clear that there were expectations from TFA that were not met in TLJ.

These two categories of viewers, plus the alienated EU fans, make up the 30-35% of fans we see that are against the ST. For fans of Finn, TLJ is a disappointment compared to what they had envisioned coming out of TFA. In TLJ, much of his screen time is during a subplot, while Rey and Kylo form the central plot of the film. There, he was with Rey much of the time and was in the main plot. On top of that, Finn’s role in the movie, while having an important arc, is not as important as it was in TFA. Poe and Finn, for example, had great chemistry in TFA, but were barely seen together in TLJ, hence the comment “Poe and Finn should’ve been together on Canto Bight”. There are people that like TFA but don’t like TLJ - why? I think it’s because TFA emphasized some things that people enjoyed, but were de-emphasized in TLJ. The latter category is where things get interesting. I put both of these groups in the former category. People that liked the prequels would no doubt be disappointed with this, and some people that like the OT would feel like it didn’t properly carry the torch. TFA set up fan expectations in a certain way, and while TLJ was a satisfying film to many of us here on Cantina, it failed to meet others’ expectations of a sequel with grander scope, similar to AOTC. There are actually, in my opinion, two separate groups that got alienated from the ST because of TLJ - the general group of people that thought it didn’t fit with the OT’s characterization, and part of the new group of fans that delved into Star Wars after watching TFA.

Rogue One is much of the same, maybe even bringing back some of the EU fans. TFA goes ahead with 90-95% fan base approval. Some folks were already predisposed against liking the ST because it wiped out the EU they loved and were already deeply invested in - makes perfect sense. Reception is always about expectations versus reality. This is what I think is a key reason for why some people don’t like the ST.
